Best Practices in Educational Facilities Investments

Escola Secundaria Rodrigues de Freitas, Conservatorio de Musica do Porto, Porto, Portugal

Exemplary design categories: community use and involvement, cultural and historical value, music and theatre facilities

How the facility meets the needs of education and communities:
The aim of this project was to modernise and conserve this classified emblematic building in Porto, formerly the Rodrigues de Freitas Lyceum. The original school was constructed in the classical style in reinforced concrete in the 1930s. It was one of the first secondary schools constructed in Porto and is frequently used by the local community.

Special attention was given to improving the acoustic performance of the auditoria, orchestra rooms, etc. The project also sought to modernise and adapt the school to new pedadogical methods; and improve its environmental and energy performance.

Involvement of users and the local community in the planning and design process:
The schools' executive boards and the teachers were very closely involved in the planning and design process in terms of defining the design brief, establishing the number, type and functional requirements of learning and non-learning spaces.

Activity Areas: 56 classrooms, library, 2 auditoriums and a common outdoor area

User perspectives (1)

"In terms of construction, the result is satisfactory. However, the music, light and sound equipment need further development in order to take full advantage of the rooms."
