Best Practices in Educational Facilities Investments

Holzkirchen Realschule und Grundschule, Holzkirchen, Germany

Exemplary design categories: energy efficiency, green school, integrated services

How the facility meets the needs of education and communities:
This school complex comprises a primary school, a secondary school and a day-care facility for younger children. The architecture consciously references the pastoral landscape of this part of Bavaria. From the air and from many neighbouring buildings, the complex appears as five classroom blocks. Making good use of the contours of the site, which has a 4m drop from the top to lower part of the plot, the project has been conceived as a “school with two ground floors”. Built at the same level as the top of the site, the flat green roof is the first of these “ground floors”. Sunken courtyards have been “cut” into this plate to create courtyards and playgrounds at the lower ground floor level. General classrooms are accommodated on the upper level. With external façades of larch cladding, these rooms have oak floors and are decorated in warm colours. Students look directly out onto the 7 500m2 meadow, which can be used as a play area, as a space for outdoor classrooms and, on part of the roof, as pasture for cattle. From street level, it becomes apparent that this meadow is a large green roof that covers a lower ground level, where there are further classrooms and a sports hall. Each classroom is naturally lit and ventilated. The green roof provides good insulation and minimises rainwater run-off. In the interior, the exposed concrete floors, ceilings and walls throughout the building have a thermal mass that helps to maintain stable room temperatures.
