Best Practices in Educational Facilities Investments

New Roundhouse, Manchester, UK-England

Exemplary design categories: comfort, community use and involvement, cultural and historical value, energy efficiency, flexible learning settings

How the facility meets the needs of education and communities:
Occupying an infill site, the New Roundhouse replaces a nineteenth century building. Salvaged fragments of the demolished terracotta façade have been incorporated into a feature wall to act as a focal point within the social space. Manchester Settlement, a registered charity, runs educational programmes at the building for young people who have been excluded from secondary education, offering progression routes to further education and training or back to mainstream education. There are also students on education projects run by The Prince’s Trust and Manchester College. The building offers a protective, welcoming environment. Teaching areas are housed on the upper floors and the ground floors are for community use. Classrooms are arranged around an internal atrium that allows natural daylight to reach deep within the building. The layout of the upper floors is based around the principle of combining cellular teaching and staff accommodation with flexible and more open teaching spaces. The project was designed from the outset to have a low energy use at all levels. The building is constructed from an exposed in-situ reinforced concrete frame giving high thermal mass without recourse to air-conditioning. Complex mechanical services have been avoided in favour of underfloor heating and a passive ventilation system. Exhaust air is drawn up from all floors through a central atrium which acts as a solar chimney.
