Best Practices in Educational Facilities Investments

Murska Sobota School of Economics, Murska Sobota, Slovenia

Exemplary design categories: community use and involvement, flexible learning settings

How the facility meets the needs of education and communities:
Located close to a new commercial and industrial development, the new school has become a centre for sport, cultural activities and other social events. Through its rational design and flexible use of space, the school easily accommodates its different users groups and works as a small community. As the school provides education at secondary and tertiary level, it has been organised into discrete spatial and programmatic cores. The college occupies the front wing of the building and the central wing accommodates the secondary school. The sports hall, training rooms and changing facilities are in the third wing at the rear of the building. Sets of uniform classrooms and teachers’ offices are located between the main wings and can be used flexibly by each educational unit. Each wing is organised around a double-height hall. There are some 30 classrooms in the school, with a large lecture hall in the front wing of the building, and a multipurpose hall, a small lecture room and a refectory in the central wing. The school building is characterised by a uniform and restrained façade realised in dark grey ceramic tiles punctuated by long glass lines, which contrasts strongly with the colourful facades in the nearby commercial area, and provides a neutral background for the school’s external spaces. The colour scheme is vivid: doors, acoustic and protective panels, furniture and other elements are in distinct colours that correspond to different programmes, thus enabling clear orientation through the complex. There are large windows and glazed walls in classrooms, offices and circulation spaces, providing daylight and panoramic views, thus merging interior and exterior spaces.
