Exemplary design categories: access, community use and involvement, cost efficiency, school/community regeneration

How the facility meets the needs of education and communities:
The aim of this school - which specialises in teacher training for pre-school, hospitality, food and tourism - was to create a strong reference for quality education within a complex urban setting. The school complex is enveloped by a large fluid timber roof that encloses a sports court and the three-storey classroom block. At the heart of the school, there is an opening in the roof envelope above a central courtyard. Access and movement around the building is fluid and dynamic. A central courtyard forms the heart of this school, around which a ramp spirals up giving access to the classrooms on three floors. There are multiple entrances to learning spaces, and large windows allow students to see their classmates working in the kitchens, teaching in the preschool rooms or simulating a hotel from the courtyard. The local community was involved in the project from the outset, having a strong input into the type of school needed in the area and helping to choose the architect following an architectural competition. Local people also participated in consultations during the design phase.
